Fernando de Noronha: Main Attractions

An island surrounded by crystal-clear waters whose temperature always hovers around 28°C and inhabited by rich marine life, its vocation is defined by diving, surfing, sailing—anything that brings us closer to the kingdom of Yemanja. But on dry land, there are also several alternative activities, such as light or moderate hikes, free lectures on various topics, and visits to the historic center of Vila dos Remédios, viewpoints, and cafés.

The island’s archaeological heritage consists of 10 fortifications, with the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Fort being the largest fortification in the entire 17th-century defensive system implemented by the Portuguese. This fort was built on the original Dutch stronghold, erected in 1629. It was used both as a common and political prison and as a barracks for soldiers during World War II.

It is the main and most beautiful marine park in Brazil, considered one of the best places in the world for diving, where visibility can reach up to 50 meters. The diversity of dive sites offers diving opportunities for all levels, from beginners and beginners to advanced and deep dives, including the Corvette wreck.

Fish and Seafood are the most popular choices, but there are several restaurants offering international cuisine, including pasta, risottos, crepes, and some pay-by-weight options at lunchtime – perfect for a meal between dives.

Fernando de Noronha is a truly unique destination along the Brazilian coast. Home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, it should, however, be offered with a few important considerations:

The cost of staying on the island is high for the reasons already mentioned: all food supplies, including drinking water, come from the mainland, as the island has virtually no local production. Building materials, fuel, maintenance supplies – everything must be transported by cargo ship from Recife.

Homestay guesthouses are basic, although their prices are similar to those of 3-star hotels in the Southeast of Brazil. It is essential that the client understands they will be staying in a type of prefabricated structure, where only breakfast is served – typically a modest offering with a limited selection of fruit and bread. However, the experience of being in such a stunning location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean makes the trip more than worthwhile.

The other categories of guesthouses offer much more comfort, with some being extremely luxurious, although their rates are significantly higher. Regardless of the accommodation, access to beaches always involves walking or renting a bicycle, buggy, motorbike or car. Despite this, it is all worth it – the island has a very special energy, breathtaking scenery and the promise of unforgettable memories.
